GAZA, Feb. 21 (YPA) – Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor condemned the silence of the Chief Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator in Gaza, Sigrid Kaag, and her ignoring of the catastrophic situation developing in Gaza Strip, especially the outbreak of famine.
The Monitor confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that Kaag did not exert tangible pressure on the international community, especially the concerned parties, to draw attention to the serious humanitarian crisis occurring in the northern Gaza Valley, and address shocking situation.
“What enters the Gaza Strip does not meet the minimum needs of civilians for food, drinking water and medicine,” the statement said. “Kaag’s inaction raises particular concern in light of its mandate, which requires facilitating and accelerating assistance to civilians in Gaza.”
It affirmed that Euro-Med noted that the UN official, Kaag, refrained from exerting pressure on Israel and the parties concerned to ensure safe access to humanitarian supplies, which raises serious questions about its commitment to performing its mission in the face of the reality of the struggle to survive in Gaza.
The statement stressed that Kaag’s recent participation with the Israeli authorities, including taking a smiling photo with Israeli official, Ghassan Alian, sparked additional justified criticism, especially Alian publicly threatened to make the lives of the people of Gaza a living hell and deprive them of all necessities of life.
The Euro-Med’s statement called on “Kaag” to break its silence regarding the situation in Gaza City and its north, and to emphasize its condemnation of Israeli occupation’s use of famine as a weapon of war in the region and to use all available means to ensure the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid.
About 700,000 Palestinians in the Gaza and its north are suffering from real famine as a result of the Israeli siege and the lack of aid.
