Libyan National Army: More than 2,000 killed due to Storm Daniel

WORLD, Sept. 12 (YPA) – Ahmed Al-Mismari, the spokesman for the Libyan National Army, which controls eastern Libya, announced on Monday evening that more than 2,000 bodies had been recovered after they lost their lives as a result of floods caused by heavy rains in eastern Libya over the past days.

Al-Mismari attributed the catastrophe to the collapse of two nearby dams, causing a lethal flash flood.

“The situation in Derna and Al-Marj in the east of the country is catastrophic,” he said, adding that between over 5000 people are still missing. Two areas have disappeared in the Derna area due to floods.”

He pointed out that units of the Libyan National Army are participating in rescue operations.

Earlier, the head of Libya’s Tripoli-based unity government, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, declared three days of national mourning for the victims of deadly floods that ravaged the North African country.
