Wave of popular discontent rises in Socotra as pro-UAE governor vows to suppress protests

SOCOTRA, July 24 (YPA) -Waves of popular discontent and anger are increasing in the Socotra neighborhoods, as a result of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC)’s failure to deal with the deterioration of the living situation on the island.

Informed sources revealed on Sunday that pro-STC governor, Raafat al-Thaqali, vowed to violently suppress those who go out to protest. People are currently in the streets protesting against a deterioration of basic services, soaring food prices, and the collapse of national currency.

According to the sources, Al-Thaqali deployed security belt forces to the province to prevent and suppress any demonstrations, even if their demands are legitimate rights guaranteed by the constitution.

On Saturday, the Shahkhmi tribe in Qalansiya issued a statement condemning the repression and arrest of citizens from homes and streets by the UAE-backed factions during an angry demonstration against the deterioration of their living conditions and high prices.

The tribe denounced the governor’s crackdown on residents, which includes raiding homes, blocking people from accessing public roads, preventing passage between districts, and spreading terror and fear in the archipelago. The tribe demanded the dismissal of the governor, who failed to manage the affairs of Socotra.
