Imposing new taxes in Taiz sparks angry popular uprising

TAIZ, April 11 (YPA) – Dozens of Al-Mawasit district’s sons in Taiz province staged on Tuesday an angry popular rally and civil disobedience against raising levies imposed by the leadership of the so-called “35th Brigade” loyal to the Saudi-led coalition.

Local sources in the district said the protesters demonstrated in Al-Ain and Al-Mawasit Center to denounce the exorbitant financial levies imposed by the commander of the brigade, “Abdul Rahman Al-Shamsani,” loyal to Islah Party, on merchants and shops.

The sources reported that gunmen from the brigade, on military vehicles, raided the shops, and forced the merchants to pay the sums determined by the brigade’s command by force of arms.

Al-Mawasit district has witnessed the widespread public anger due to the violations and levies imposed on merchants and shop owners, amid the absence of state authorities for the past years.
