NEW YORK, Dec. 16 (YPA) – The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday approved, by an overwhelming majority, a resolution affirming the permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people over their natural resources.
The number of countries voted in favor of the resolution are 159, while 10 countries abstained from voting, and 8 opposed it, which are the Israeli occupation entity, the United States, Canada, Chad, Marshall, Micronesia, Palau, and Nauru.
The text of the resolution, which was voted on last November 12, stated that “the General Assembly requests the International Court of Justice to urgently issue an advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from Israel’s continued violation of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, its long-term occupation of the Palestinian land, its settlement and annexation of it, in addition to the impact of the Israeli occupation policies on the legal status of the occupation.”
For his part, the Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, said that the vote confirms the almost unanimous support for the Palestinian right, stressing the need for the Israeli occupation entity to adhere to the content of the resolution, and the need for the world to force it to implement it.
