Taliban leaders hold press conference at Kabul Presidential Palace

KABUL, Aug. 16 (YPA) – Hours after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled the country, Taliban leaders held a press conference at the presidential palace in Kabul, al-Jazeera footage showed.

A senior Taliban official said on Sunday that the group’s quick victory over the Afghan government is an unprecedented achievement, but the real test of effective governance will now begin after the group wins power.

In a brief video statement, Baradar heads the political office of the Taliban said the victory that saw all major cities fall within a week was unexpectedly rapid and unprecedented in the world.
However, he said the real test would now begin by meeting people’s expectations and serving them by solving their problems.

Televised scenes showed dozens of Taliban fighters taking control of the presidential palace in Kabul and celebrating their victory over the Afghan government.

“Our country was liberated and the mujahedeen won in Afghanistan,” a rebel told Qatar-owned Al-Jazeera TV
The fighters took control of the palace after the escape of President Ashraf Ghani, who acknowledged the Taliban’s “victory.”
