ABYAN, Dec. 7 (YPA) – At least five soldiers and officers were killed in Abyan, southern Yemen on Monday, in an attack by unknown assailants on a checkpoint belonging to UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council( STC)’s militias .
Local sources said that the attack was carried out with various types of weapons and targeted an electricity point in the Lauder district, leaving a number of wounded, as well as destroying a military pickup vehicle.
The identity and motives of the attackers are not yet known, although pro-STC activists have suggested that al-Qaeda was behind the attack.
The Lauder district is one of the central directorates of Abyan, which Hadi and Al-STC have been fighting for control since the start of the war in the province in August last year.
