53 Arab human rights alliances demand reopening of Sanaa airport

SANAA, Sept. 18 (YPA) – 53 human rights alliances and organizations from 13 Arab countries on Wednesday called on the international community to quickly re-open Sanaa International Airport, as a humanitarian necessity and a duty towards the Yemeni people.

In a letter handed over to the UN Special Envoy’s office in Yemen, the human rights organizations considered the continued closure of Sanaa airport a serious violation of the rights of civilians, including the right to life, in addition to the suffering of patients in need for treatment abroad.

The letter explained the suffering of Yemenis due to the continued closure of the airport, referring the number of deaths due to serious diseases has doubled because patients are unable to travel for treatment.

Many citizens are stranded abroad, including scholarship students, and could not return home due to the continued closure of Sanaa airport, according to the letter.

The letter called on the United Nations to take strict decisions and measures that oblige the Saudi-led coalition to open Sanaa airport without delay.
