65 people killed in two attacks in Nigeria

SANAA, July 29 (YPA)- At least 65 people have been killed in two attacks supposedly carried out by militants of takfiri terrorist groups in the northern region of Borno, Reuters reported quoting national Nigerian media.

Nigerian television quoted local government chairman Mohammed Bulama as saying that the attackers killed 21 people while they returned from a funeral, and killed 44 others as they tried to rally afterwards in self-defence.

Bulama added that many others were injured, indicating that the death toll could increase still.

An eyewitness said he saw the gunmen gather before shooting at the participants at a funeral in a village, while a security source said that the takfiris stormed the village on motorcycles and vans.

No one has claimed responsibility, but Boko Haram and Daesh (ISIS) are known for regularly carrying out attacks in the region, and Borno province is the stronghold of Boko Haram and the breakaway branch of Daesh in West Africa.

Takfiri groups have been carrying out attacks in Nigeria for nearly 10 years, killing thousands and displacing millions in the country’s northeast
