Haaretz: Qatar abandons the Palestinian cause and announces its participation in US-held conference in Bahrain
SANAA, May 28 (YPA) – Qatar has confirmed its participation in an economic workshop to be held in the Bahraini capital of Manama, only two days after originally declaring its non-participation and support of the Palestinian cause.
This was reported by Israeli news daily Haaretz.
“Doha intends to attend the international economic Workshop during the next June in order to discuss ways to make investments in the region, especially in Palestine,” the Hebrew daily newspaper said.
“Qatar is the third country to confirm its participation after Saudi Arabia and the UAE despite the media campaign launched by the Qatari media against the workshop since it was announced,” the paper quoted a co-source in the organisation of the economic workshop.
“Manama, in partnership with Washington, is hosting an economic workshop entitled ‘Peace for Prosperity’ on the 25th and 26th of next month,” a US-Bahraini joint statement read.
The conference is aimed at attracting investment to the region in tandem with the achievement of Palestinian-Israeli peace, in the first American event within the first part of the so-called the “Deal of the Century”.
US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will officially head the US delegation, which includes Jason Greenblatt, the US Special Envoy for Middle East , Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and senior advisor, and US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman.
According to Haaretz, most delegations from other countries are also expected to represent finance or economy ministers.
The Qatari foreign Ministry issued a statement last Saturday, confirming its support for the Palestinian cause and its opposition to the workshop. However, it seems to have rescinded this anti-Zionist sentiment.
The “Deal of the Century” is the name of Donald Trump’s plan to enforce Zionist control over Palestine indefinitively. While many around the globe have condemned this plan, several US-linked Arab Gulf governments have supported the plan in one way or another.
“Qatar will spare no effort in order to contribute to meeting all the challenges facing the Arab region as a whole, while preserving its firm principled positions and the interests of the higher Arab people, including the brotherly Palestinian people,” the statement said.
