SANAA, March 17 (YPA) -The Chiefs of General Staff of both Iraq and Iran visited the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday, in order to hold a tripartite meeting with the Syrian army chief of staff, Iran’s Fars News Agency. reported
“The Chief of General Staff of Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri headed a military delegation to Damascus, with the aim of participating in the tripartite meeting on combating terrorism,” according to Fars News.
“General Bagri’s visit is aimed at developing military defence cooperation and on conducting consultations on counter-terrorism and coordination between Iran, Iraq and Syria,” it said.
In addition to the following up on mechanisms for establishing stability and security in the region, the visit also includes an inspection tour of Iranian military advisers in Syria.
In the same context, the Chief of Staff of the Iraqi Army, Lieutenant General Othman al-Ghanmi, has headed to Damascus to participate in the meeting.
Iraq, Syria and Iran are often considered to the main three members of the so-called Axis of Resistance in the Middle East, supporting one another in terms of national sovereignty and the fight against imperialism and terrorism.
