Afghan president to vie for second term

SANAA, Jan. 21 (YPA) – Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday registered as a presidential candidate for the July election

About 14 candidates, including incumbent Prime Minister Abdullah Abdullah, and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the former prime minister and leader of the Islamic Party, one of Afghanistan’s most prominent warlords, are participating in the elections scheduled for July 20.

Ghani was elected president of Afghanistan in 2014, following a power-sharing deal between him and his rival Abdullah Abdullah, who under the deal became prime minister of Afghanistan.
