Griffiths: Sanaa airport must be opened, as right of Yemeni people

STOCKHOLM, Dec. 10 (YPA) – UN envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, on Monday said that it is necessary to open Sanaa Airport, as that is a right of Yemeni people.

In a press conference held this evening, Griffiths said that the Yemeni talks in Sweden focused on the economic situation and the humanitarian aspects.

“It is necessary that the consultations result in an agreement regardless of the names of participants in them,” he added.

Griffiths affirmed that there are real and serious opportunities to start negotiations on a final solution between the Yemeni parties, expressing his hope to reach a halt to fighting in Hodeidah.

On the prisoners exchange, he said that the agreement is about to be signed, and that the number of prisoners to be released would be announced soon.

The UN envoy revealed that the draft leaked earlier about the agreement on Hodeidah was not real, and that the document being worked on is much simpler than the leaked one.

He said that “much progress has been achieved, but the consultations did not reach the finish line, and there is a lot of work to be done.”
