Health Minister, UN’s Lowcock discuss health situation in Yemen

SANAA, Nov. 29 (YPA) – Minister of Public Health and Population Dr. Taha al-Mutawakil on Thursday discussed in Sanaa with Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Mark Lowcock, the health and humanitarian situations in Yemen.

In the meeting, Dr. al-Mutawkil reviewed the health and epidemiological conditions in the country, including the outbreak of cholera, diphtheria and other epidemics, as well as the difficulties in providing medicines and therapeutic supplies.

The minister stressed the need to place urgent solutions to save the health situation in Yemen, especially in light of the military escalation and targeting of civilians by Saudi-led coalition.

Dr. al-Mutawkil touched on the suffering of patients with chronic diseases due to preventing them from traveling abroad for treatment, noting that there are 130 thousand patients at risk of death and 8,000 patients under dialysis.

He confirmed the ministry’s readiness to facilitate the international organizations’ work in Yemen to alleviate the humanitarian suffering of Yemeni people.

In the meeting, Lowcock pointed to the importance of continuing to provide support to Yemen to meet the urgent needs, reviewing the efforts made during the past year in combating the cholera in the country.
