WASHINGTON, Nov. 04 (YPA) – Democrats has achieved a major political victory in the latest US elections, securing control of the country’s legislative agenda after winning majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, dealing a major blow to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.
This was reported by CNN and CNBC.
According to preliminary results, as vote counting continues, Democrats have secured 220 seats in the House of Representatives, compared with 128 seats for Republicans, out of a total of 435 seats.
Their majority in the Senate has also been confirmed, with 52 of the 100 seats. At the state level, Democrats continued their lead, winning 24 gubernatorial seats, compared with just 18 for Republicans.
In one of the biggest election-night surprises, media projections showed Democratic pediatrician Annie Andrews defeating Trump-backed Republican candidate Darlene Graham in South Carolina.
Graham had been appointed to succeed her brother, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, following his death in July. Democrats had not won a Senate race in the traditionally Republican state since 1998.
The South Carolina result followed another Republican setback in North Carolina, where former governor Roy Cooper defeated Michael Whatley, the former chairman of the Republican National Committee, whom Trump had personally selected for the race.
Another major upset came in Kansas, where Adam Hamilton defeated incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall, marking the first Democratic victory in the Senate race there since 1932. In Texas, Democrat James Talarico also won the Senate race, flipping another seat for his party.
