SANAA, Oct. 15 (YPA) – The National Human Rights Commission strongly condemned the Saudi enemy’s warplanes’ systematic targeting of Al-Ma’afer district in Taiz, where they targeted Al-Ma’afer School in an attempt to destroy a civilian educational institution, and targeted the communications network in Al-Nashma to isolate the district and cut off communication with its residents.
The Commission considered the targeting of schools a grave violation of international humanitarian law, Article 52 of Additional Protocol I (Protection of Civilian Objects), and Article 26 of the Universal Declaration on the Right to Education, and a fully-fledged war crime according to Article 8-2-b of the Rome Statute.
It pointed out that targeting the communications network is a double crime, disrupting basic services and the right to communication and distress, and falls under the category of internationally prohibited collective punishment.
It held the Saudi regime fully legally and criminally responsible and called on the United Nations, UNESCO, and the International Telecommunication Union to explicitly condemn the crime and take action to protect civilian and educational objects in Yemen.
