Mayor in France raises Palestinian flag over Vénissieux town hall

PARIS, Sept. 23 (YPA) – The mayor of Vénissieux, France, Idir Pomeretit, a member of the “France Unbowed” party and of Algerian origin, raised the Palestinian flag alongside the French flag on the town hall facade, in a symbolic move to commemorate the first anniversary of France’s recognition of the State of Palestine.

 

He posted a video of himself installing the two flags, explaining that he would remove them the following day after the prefect of the Rhône region requested their removal, threatening administrative action on the grounds of the neutrality of public facilities, to avoid a lengthy legal process.

 

The move comes after 86 municipalities raised the flag last year, following President Macron’s announcement at the United Nations on September 22, 2025, of France’s official recognition of the State of Palestine and his intention to open an embassy in the Palestinian territories.
