Pentagon asks for faster weapons production after stockpiles depleted in war with Iran

WASHINGTON, Aug. 09 (YPA) – The U.S. Department of Defense has asked defense industry companies to accelerate the production and delivery of weapons and ammunition, following a decline in U.S. stockpiles due to the ongoing war with Iran.

 

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the department is currently focused on accelerating ammunition procurement to provide the weapons needed by combatants at the speed demanded by the threats.

 

He explained that the department took steps last week to increase production and supply, as part of a broader effort to modernize forces and rebuild the defense industrial base that began before the war with Iran.

 

According to a memo cited by The Washington Post, Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg gave defense company leaders 21 days to submit plans to accelerate delivery schedules and increase production of critical military capabilities.

 

Feinberg wrote that development cycles that take years are no longer acceptable, calling for an immediate expansion of production capacity.

 

This move comes after reports indicated that the United States consumed most of its global stockpile of long-range precision missiles during the confrontation with Iran.
