Iran announces downing of US MQ-9 drone over Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN, Aug. 03 (YPA) – Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced, on Monday, that it shot down a US MQ-9 drone while it was flying in the airspace of the Strait of Hormuz after it was detected during a reconnaissance mission.

In a statement, the IRGC said that Iranian air defense systems engaged the drone and successfully shot it down, stressing that the armed forces are monitoring any military movements in the vicinity of the borders and will deal firmly with any threat to Iranian sovereignty.

The announcement comes amid escalating tensions in the Gulf and increased US military movements, with Tehran repeatedly asserting that the security of the Gulf should be in the hands of the region’s countries.

It is worth noting that the MQ-9 is used by US forces for reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, and precision strikes.
