NIAMEY, July 19 (YPA) – Sixteen soldiers were killed and 23 others wounded in an armed attack targeting a military detachment in the Tera region of western Niger, near the borders with Mali and Burkina Faso.
The official news agency in Niger reported on Sunday that the attack occurred on Friday and also resulted in the deaths of 15 attackers and serious injuries to nine soldiers, according to Agence France-Presse.
It added that search operations, the pursuit of the attackers, and securing the area are still ongoing.
For more than a decade, Niger has witnessed frequent attacks by armed groups, while the military council that took power in July 2023 faces challenges in containing the violence.
