Iran: No reason to adhere to MoU; full freedom retained to counter aggression
TEHRAN, July 16 (YPA) – The Iranian Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, emphasized on Wednesday that Iran’s approach to war or negotiations must be grounded in realism, national interests, and national security.
He cautioned that separating negotiation and war as mutually exclusive options is a “strategic mistake.”
Ghalibaf asserted that any memorandum of understanding (MoU) holds no value unless its terms are active and enforceable, adding there is no justification for Iran to adhere to any agreement that does not serve its national interests.
He affirmed that the Iranian Armed Forces retain full operational freedom to counter US aggression. Additionally, Ghalibaf linked Iran’s national security to maintaining its defense arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring the safe passage of commercial vessels.
Ghalibaf further explained that Iran correctly closed the Strait of Hormuz during the recent war, unlike its actions during the 12-day war, because the continuation of maritime navigation at that time posed a direct threat to its national security.
