WASHINGTON, June 24 (YPA) – The U.S. Senate has adopted a resolution calling on U.S. President Donald Trump to halt military operations against Iran.
According to the American network CBS News, the Senate on Tuesday approved a war powers resolution on Iran that had already passed the House of Representatives. It marks the first time such a measure has passed both chambers of Congress. The resolution directs the president to refrain from involving U.S. armed forces in hostilities against Iran unless Congress formally declares war or authorizes the use of military force.
The network added that the measure is a joint resolution that does not carry the force of law and does not require the president’s signature, making it largely symbolic.
In mid-June, Iran and the United States announced that they had reached a memorandum of understanding through Pakistan-led international mediation.
The agreement includes arrangements to end the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28 and paves the way for 60 days of negotiations on a broader agreement covering Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, and other contentious issues.
The memorandum stipulates an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade imposed on Iran, and the easing of certain financial restrictions.
It also provides for the release of frozen Iranian assets, immediate U.S. exemptions for Iranian oil exports, and the establishment of a $300 billion fund for Iran’s reconstruction.
