Socotra Electricity accused of imposing heavy financial burdens on residents

SOCOTRA, June 17 (YPA) – Public tensions have escalated in Hadibu, the capital of the Socotra Archipelago, which is under the control of Saudi-backed forces “808,” amid widespread accusations against the local electricity corporation of abandoning its service role and turning into an investment entity engaged in as “financial extortion.”

Local activists from Socotra said the electricity corporation has imposed a prepaid metering system without clear pricing criteria.

They added that subscribers are facing unexplained surges in consumption, with users reportedly being shifted within hours from low to high tariff brackets.

Activists said this has placed a heavy financial burden on households already affected by unpaid salaries and deteriorating living conditions.

They warned that such policies are pushing residents toward unsafe and unregulated connections, fueling black-market activity, and increasing pressure on power transformers, leading in some cases to failures and fire damage.
