Despite US-sponsored ceasefire extension, Israeli occupation launches wave of airstrikes on Lebanese towns

BEIRUT, May 17 (YPA) – The Israeli occupation authorities have carried out a series of widespread violations targeting Lebanese villages and towns since dawn on Sunday.

This comes despite the announcement of a US-sponsored 45-day extension to the ceasefire agreement, following a round of tripartite negotiations in Washington that resulted in “tangible diplomatic progress” in Lebanon’s favor.

The occupation’s drones and warplanes launched airstrikes targeting the towns of Sahmar, Jabchit, and Tayr Debba, coinciding with continuous explosions and large-scale demolition operations conducted by the occupation army in the town of Al-Khiam.

Meanwhile, sirens sounded in Margaliot and Manara in the Galilee Panhandle over fears of drone infiltrations by Hezbollah, which continues to respond by targeting the Israeli army in southern Lebanon and border settlements in northern occupied Palestine.

Notably, the war waged by “Israel” on Lebanon since March 2, 2026, has resulted in the killing of 2,951 people, the injuring of 8,988 others, and the displacement of over a million people. The occupation has continued to escalate its attacks through bombardment, destruction, and forced displacement since the initial ceasefire agreement on April 17.
