UN Envoy announces agreement to release over 1,600 detainees in Yemen
AMMAN, May 14 (YPA) – The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, announced on Thursday that Yemeni parties have reached an agreement in the Jordanian capital, Amman, to release more than 1,600 conflict-related prisoners, a figure he described as “unprecedented” since the beginning of the crisis.
This achievement follows 14 weeks of intensive negotiations under United Nations auspices. Grundberg emphasized that the agreement represents a “moment of great relief for thousands of Yemenis” and serves as clear evidence of the effectiveness of dialogue in building trust and supporting the broader peace process.
The UN Envoy noted that the parties also agreed to continue meetings for further release operations and to conduct joint visits to detention facilities to ensure access to all detainees.
Grundberg concluded his statement by urging the parties to build on this momentum, reaffirming their commitment to the “all-for-all” principle established under the Stockholm Agreement.
He expressed his gratitude to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for their roles in the success of this round of negotiations.
