Israeli police confiscate Hungarian flag over resemblance to Palestinian flag

QUDS, April 27 (YPA) – Israeli occupation’s police on Monday confiscated a Hungarian flag from a demonstrator protesting the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, claiming that its red, white, and green colors could be mistaken for the Palestinian flag and provoke tensions during the rally.

The incident, described by observers as unusual, has drawn attention to the heightened security sensitivities surrounding public demonstrations in Israel.

According to Haaretz, the event took place last Saturday during protests at the Karkur Junction in northern occupied Palestine.

The protester was carrying the Hungarian national flag, which had no declared political connection to the Palestinian issue.

The demonstrator said he attempted to explain to officers that the flag belonged to Hungary and carried no alternative symbolism. However, he said one officer responded that “some people might not understand that.”

He added that he offered to return the flag to his vehicle in order to avoid confrontation, but police allegedly refused and proceeded with confiscation. The flag was later returned after the protest concluded.

The incident came amid increasing restrictions by the occupation authorities on symbols considered “provocative” during public gatherings.

Palestinian flags have frequently been removed or confiscated at demonstrations under public order justifications, despite ongoing legal debate over such measures.

Analysts said the seizure of a European national flag because of its color similarity to the Palestinian flag reflects growing political tension and raises broader questions about proportionality, freedom of expression, and enforcement standards during protests.
