WASHINGTON, April 01 (YPA) – US President Donald Trump sparked widespread controversy after discussing the possibility of the United States withdrawing from NATO, arguing that the alliance is no longer fulfilling its role as it should.
Trump stated that he is seriously considering the possibility of the United States withdrawing from NATO, noting that he has long considered the alliance a “paper tiger.”
US President’s remarks came in an interview with the British newspaper “The Telegraph,” where he confirmed that Washington is reassessing its commitments within the military alliance.
Trump added that the United States has historically provided automatic support to its allies, but he believes this support has not been reciprocated adequately, citing the situation in Ukraine as an example.
He noted that some allies did not respond to American demands to send naval vessels to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, following tensions that affected navigation there.
This controversy comes amid growing concerns about the impact of disruptions to shipping traffic in the strait on global energy markets, as about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes through it, leading to higher prices and increased fears of a global economic slowdown.
