WASHINGTON, Feb. 07 (YPA) – The White House is planning to convene a leaders’ meeting of the “Gaza Peace Council” on February 19, The American news website ‘Axios’ reported early Saturday, citing a US official and diplomats from four member states.
According to the sources, the planned meeting would mark the council’s first official session and would feature a donors’ conference focused on Gaza’s reconstruction. Preparations remain in the early stages and could still change, while the White House has declined to comment publicly.
The Trump administration has begun contacting dozens of countries to invite their leaders and coordinate logistical arrangements for the meeting, which is expected to be held in Washington, Axios added.
Axios also quoted US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz as saying that Washington is seeking to launch “an agreed-upon disarmament process,” including the dismantling of military infrastructure and tunnels in the Gaza Strip.
The council currently consists of 27 members and is chaired by Trump. It has been authorized by the UN Security Council to oversee the implementation of the ceasefire in Gaza and to work on governance and reconstruction.
Despite the start of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, progress has been extremely slow.
