SHABWA, Jan. 29 (YPA) – Fierce clashes erupted Wednesday in Azan, a city in Yemen’s Shabwa Governorate controlled by Saudi-led coalition forces, amid a security collapse that has gripped the region since 2016.
Local sources reported that armed tribal fighters engaged in heavy fighting in the crowded Azan market, leaving one woman from the Al-Suleiman family seriously injured.
She was rushed to a hospital in Mukalla, Hadramout, for emergency treatment.
The source said the attackers targeted a shop belonging to Abdulhakim Ba Shiba over a tribal revenge dispute, turning the crowded marketplace into a battlefield.
The gunfire caused extensive damage to shops and private property, fueling chaos in Shabwa, where a decade-long absence of state authority has left civilians exposed to lawlessness.
Markets in the province have increasingly become sites for settling tribal scores, with little regard for civilian safety.
The incident sparked outrage among citizens and market-goers, who voiced growing concern over repeated deadly attacks in public spaces with no apparent deterrent.
