Armed mutiny at “Nukhan” Camp in Shabwa ousts leaders from Dhalea, Lahj

SHABWA, Jan. 17 (YPA) – An expansive armed mutiny broke out Saturday at the “Nukhan” military camp in Shabwa governorate, eastern Yemen.

Officers and soldiers from the local Shabwa population revolted against the camp’s leadership, successfully expelling military commanders from Dhalea and Lahj governorates.

The situation escalated after commanders from Dhalea and Lahj seized hundreds of weapons and ammunition, distributing them exclusively to loyalist recruits from their home regions while excluding Shabwa-born personnel.

The rebellion follows over two years of systematic marginalization, exclusionary regionalist policies, and illegal salary deductions targeting Shabwa officers.

High tensions persist as local soldiers demand the complete departure of all outside leadership. Meanwhile, tribal and military mediators are attempting to contain the situation to prevent direct armed clashes.

These developments occur amidst a broader collapse within UAE-backed factions, following reports of the dissolution of the “Southern Transitional Council” and the flight of several high-ranking political and military figures earlier this month.
