Dramatic shifts in Shabwa, security tensions in Marib redraw influence maps in eastern Yemen

SHABWAH/MARIB, Jan. 03 (YPA) – The governorates of Shabwa and Marib have witnessed rapid developments that have upended the political and military landscape, amid escalating regional competition over spheres of influence and oil-rich territories in eastern Yemen.

Sudden Defection in Shabwa

On Saturday, the Governor of Shabwa, Awad bin al-Wazir, announced his defection from the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), declaring support for Saudi-led calls for dialogue. This follows the takeover of Sayoun city and the Hadramout Valley and Desert by Saudi-backed factions.

Saudi Welcome and Military Ultimatum

The Saudi ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al Jaber, described Bin al-Wazir’s move as a “return to the right path.” Meanwhile, sources revealed directives from Rashad al-Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, ordering the Governor to expel STC factions from Shabwa within 48 hours to avoid intervention by the Saudi-backed “Dera Al-Watan” forces.

Political Uncertainty

Doubts remain regarding Bin al-Wazir’s ability to enforce this decision, amid speculation that the move might be a precursor to his dismissal as part of broader reshuffles targeting UAE-aligned officials.

Security Escalation in Marib

Within less than 48 hours, Marib city witnessed two assassination attempts against prominent military leaders. Sadeq Maoada, commander of the 312th Brigade, survived an IED blast in front of his home, following an armed ambush targeting military leader Yahya al-Hatemi.

These consecutive events place the eastern oil-producing provinces on the brink of an open conflict, as regional and local actors move to redraw the map of power and settle political accounts.
