BRUSSELS, Dec. 24 (YPA) – The International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced on Tuesday that Belgium has officially submitted an application to intervene in the case filed by South Africa against “Israel” regarding the commission of “genocide” in the Gaza Strip.
In a statement, the Court noted that the Belgian request is based on Article 63 of the Court’s Statute. Through this intervention, Brussels seeks to provide a legal interpretation of Article II of the Genocide Convention, focusing specifically on the concept of “genocidal intent” and the criteria required to establish it.
This move follows a series of Belgian positions supporting the recognition of the State of Palestine, as it joins a list of countries that have announced their intervention in the case—including Spain, Ireland, and Turkey—within the legal proceedings initiated by South Africa in December 2023.
