QUDS, Dec. 21 (YPA) – The Israeli occupation’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir submitted on Sunday a proposal to establish a new detention facility for Palestinian prisoners surrounded by crocodiles, allegedly to prevent escape attempts, in a move that drew widespread criticism for its dehumanization of prisoners.
Hebrew Channel 13 said on Sunday that the minister discussed the proposal during a security meeting last week with the head of the occupation’s Prison Service, which includes plans to establish a detention facility near the Hamat Gader area in northern occupied Palestine, as well as legislative efforts in the Knesset to toughen penalties for prisoners.
Rights activists said the proposal reflected a serious escalation in the occupation’s policies towards Palestinian prisoners, amid warnings that such measures could entrench practices that violate international humanitarian law and international standards.
Over 110 Palestinian detainees have been killed in Israeli custody since late 2022, while more than 9,300 keep in detention amid warnings of systematic human rights violations, according to rights groups.
