Child dies of cold in Khan Younis as storm death toll rises to 13

GAZA, Dec. 18 (YPA) – Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza Strip confirmed the death of a child due to extreme cold in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis, southern Gaza.

This latest tragedy brings the total number of fatalities linked to the severe winter storm, “Byron,” to 13 people.

The Director of Al-Shifa Medical Complex described the humanitarian situation as “catastrophic,” warning of an acute shortage of heating equipment. He issued an urgent appeal for the delivery of prefabricated caravans and safe heating solutions to combat the freezing temperatures.

The medical complex director noted that approximately 55% of essential medicines are currently unavailable in health facilities.

The suffering of the displaced continues to worsen as the storm persists, leaving thousands vulnerable and without adequate protection from the freezing weather. Heavy winds have reportedly uprooted the tents of displaced families across several areas of the Strip. An urgent demand for safe shelter and heating as the climate crisis intersects with dire security and health conditions.
