America approves arms deal for Taiwan, amid Chinese condemnation

TAIPEI, Nov. 16 (YPA) – The United States has approved the sale of $330 million worth of fighter jet and airship spare parts to Taiwan’s fleet, in what has been described as the first arms deal for Taipei since US President Donald Trump took office in January.

In a statement, the US Department of Defense said that the deal will enhance the readiness of the Taiwanese fleet, which includes F-16s, C-130s, and other aircraft, and will help the island counter current and future threats.

The statement indicated that the spare parts will contribute to supporting Taiwan’s air defense capabilities, increasing its resilience, and enhancing its ability to counter “gray zone harassment,” which Taiwan accuses China of carrying out.

For its part, Taipei expressed its gratitude to the United States, emphasizing that the deal reflects Washington’s continued support for Taiwan’s defense capabilities.

In contrast, China strongly condemned the deal, with Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian saying that the arms sale to Taiwan “violates China’s sovereignty and security interests” and “sends a very wrong signal” to forces seeking “Taiwan independence.”

He added that Beijing categorically opposes any military cooperation between Washington and Taipei.
