UN Envoy’s Moves: Will They Break the Stalemate in Yemen’s Peace File?

SANAA, Nov. 13 (YPA) – After more than two years of political stagnation, UN movements are returning to the forefront in an attempt to revive the Yemeni peace process, which has remained stalled due to the Saudi regime’s procrastination in moving towards implementing the roadmap agreed upon with Sanaa.

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, resumed a new tour that included Saudi Arabia and the UAE, amidst rising questions about whether this tour is capable of breaking the political deadlock and stirring the stagnant waters of the peace file in Yemen.

According to a post on the UN Envoy’s Telegram account Wednesday, Grundberg concluded a round of diplomatic discussions in Riyadh and Abu Dhabi, which included meetings with Yemeni, Saudi, and Emirati officials, as well as the ambassadors of the five permanent member states of the Security Council.

These meetings discussed the ongoing UN efforts to maintain the momentum of dialogue aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability.

“Sanaa’s Calls to the Saudi Regime”

The UN Envoy’s recent moves follow calls directed by Sanaa to the Saudi regime, most notably the call by the President of the Supreme Political Council, Mahdi al-Mashat, on October 13, to move from the de-escalation phase to the phase of ending the aggression, siege, and occupation, and commencing the implementation of the clear requirements for peace.

“Rising Popular Pressure on Sanaa to Resume Escalation”

While the United Nations seeks to revive the negotiation track, the Sanaa government faces increasing popular pressure demanding it resume escalation against Saudi Arabia. This is fueled by what the Yemeni street perceives as Saudi procrastination in implementing the agreed-upon peace roadmap clauses and its continuation of hostile interventions in Yemen.

These pressures intensified following the confessions of alleged spy cell members that security services in Sanaa recently announced arresting. The confessions confirmed direct Saudi involvement in managing espionage activities inside Yemen in coordination with American and Israeli intelligence.

According to the confessions, Saudi territory has been transformed into a center for extensive espionage operations against Sanaa, managed from joint operations rooms aimed at gathering security and military intelligence.

In the face of this increasing popular pressure, a return to escalation by Sanaa is not ruled out unless the Saudi regime revises its stances and takes the initiative to begin implementing the agreed-upon roadmap with Sanaa.

It is worth noting that in September 2023, talks between Sanaa and Riyadh had reached a very advanced stage, raising expectations of the official signing of a comprehensive roadmap.

However, the path was halted in its final moments due to American intervention, as Washington exerted pressure on Riyadh to prevent the signing, citing Sanaa’s participation in the “Al-Aqsa Flood” battle and its military support for Gaza.
