Al-Mahra, Yemen, Nov. 07 (AP) – Foreign military forces and equipment have reportedly arrived at Al Ghaydah Airport in Yemen’s eastern Mahra province, a source familiar with the matter told Yemen Press Agency, raising concerns over continued violations of Yemeni sovereignty.
The airport has been transformed by Saudi Arabia into a joint military base for its allies, including the United States and the United Kingdom.
According to the source, a foreign military plane arrived on Thursday, unloading personnel and equipment. The airport has been closed to civilian flights since late 2017.
The source suggested that the newly arrived forces are likely American.
This comes after a batch of foreign troops arrived at the airport in late October, further accelerating foreign military activity in Yemen, facilitated by Saudi Arabia, which has been leading the war in the country since March 2015.
In 2021, Sheikh Ali Salem Al Huraizi, head of the anti-foreign forces sit-in committee in the province, confirmed the presence of “Israeli” officers alongside American, British, and Saudi forces at Al Ghaydah Airport.
No official statements have been issued by the government loyal to the Saudi-led coalition or Saudi forces stationed in Mahra regarding the arrival of the foreign troops and equipment, which remain shrouded in secrecy.
