Colombia recalls ambassador to US after Trump threats on tariffs, aid

BOGOTÁ, Oct. 21 (YPA) – Colombia has recalled its ambassador to Washington following US President Donald Trump’s decision to cut aid and threaten punitive tariffs on Bogotá.

Trump also launched a harsh attack on Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

“Daniel Garcia-Pena, Ambassador of Colombia in the United States of America, has been recalled for consultations by President Gustavo Petro and is now in Bogota,” the Colombian foreign ministry said. “In the coming hours the national government will inform of the decisions taken.”

Meanwhile, Colombian Interior Minister Armando Benedetti said on Monday that he viewed those remarks as “a threat of invasion or military action against Colombia”.

In a social media post on Sunday, Trump said aid to Colombia would be cut off and threatened that if Petro did not take more steps to combat the drug trafficking in the country, the US would do the task itself, “and it won’t be done nicely”.
