Prisoners’ committee in Sanaa condemns “execution” of UN-listed prisoner in Taiz

SANAA, Oct. 04 (YPA) – The National Committee for Prisoners’ Affairs in Sanaa on Saturday strongly condemned the execution of the prisoner Issa Muqbil Ali Aun Al-Afari by armed elements of the Islah Party in Taiz province, following a “bogus, illegitimate, and illegal trial” and the fabrication of a malicious charge against him.

In a statement, the Committee clarified that what Al-Afari was subjected to represents a “horrific crime” that violates all international norms and laws, and constitutes a “brazen challenge and disregard” for the agreements concluded through the United Nations and local mediators. The Committee confirmed that Al-Afari was listed on the UN-submitted prisoner exchange lists since the Stockholm Agreement in 2018.

The Committee held the leadership of the Islah Party and the Saudi regime legally and morally responsible for this crime and its repercussions on the prisoner file. It stressed that the perpetrators of this crime aim to complicate the prisoner file and hinder UN and local efforts to resolve it, asserting that the crime “will not pass unnoticed and will not be subject to the statute of limitations.”

The Committee called upon the UN Special Envoy to assume his responsibility regarding this crime, as he is fully aware of the case and the illegal trials faced by dozens of prisoners and detainees in the prisons of the “aggression mercenaries” (authorities loyal to Saudi-led coalition).

It also appealed to all international and local organizations operating in Yemen to condemn the crime and take necessary steps to prosecute its perpetrators.

The Committee concluded its statement by offering condolences to the family and loved ones of the “martyred” prisoner Al-Afari.
