ADEN, Oct. 01 (YPA) – Truck drivers operating at the Port of Aden have announced a full strike from transporting goods, protesting what they described as “illegal levies” imposed on them along the Aden-Dhalea road.
In press statements, the drivers confirmed that the UAE-backed “Southern Transitional Council” (STC) factions are unlawfully imposing massive fees, exceeding 200,000 Yemeni Riyals per truck, at various checkpoints. They noted that these unauthorized tolls have exacerbated their daily suffering and burdened them amidst deteriorating living conditions and rising operating costs.
The drivers warned that these exorbitant amounts threaten to force them out of business and could lead to the collapse of the commercial transport sector for essential goods via the port.
The drivers called on the Saudi-led coalition-backed government to put an end to the “arbitrary taxes” and threatened to continue their strike and escalate protests until transportation to and from the port is paralyzed.
This strike is part of a series of sporadic protests over the past months that failed to achieve tangible results in alleviating the burden on the drivers.
