MOSCOW, Sept. 22 (YPA) – The Arkhangelsk nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine launched an Onyx-type cruise missile at a hypothetical enemy in the Barents Sea, according to the Russian Northern Fleet’s press service.
Sputnik News Agency quoted the fleet’s press service as saying in a statement: “As part of the scheduled combat training, the Northern Fleet’s nuclear missile submarine Arkhangelsk struck a target simulating a hostile surface ship in the Barents Sea.”
The launch was carried out from an underwater position, the statement read. “The missile struck the naval target directly.”
According to Admiral Konstantin Kabantsov, Commander of the Northern Fleet, the crew showed professionalism and naval training in the preparation and conduct of firing.
The firing area was previously closed to civilian shipping and aviation, and its safety was ensured by ships of the Kola Flotilla, he said.
Arkhangelsk is a submarine of the Yasen-M project 885M, laid down in 2015 and accepted into the Navy in December 2024.
The project was developed by Malakhit Design Bureau and is equipped with modern shock and electronic systems.
