Gaza-bound “Global Sumud Flotilla” sets sail to break siege

PALERMO – The “Global Sumud Flotilla” set sail on Friday from the coast of Sicily, heading toward the Gaza Strip in an effort to break the suffocating Israeli blockade.

The fleet, which includes 48 ships from three countries, was fully assembled after Italian and Tunisian vessels joined the convoy off the Italian island’s coast.

Thiago Avila, a member of the fleet’s management, told Al-Jazeera channel that efforts are underway to reach Gaza as quickly as possible, amid what he called the “final stages of Israel’s genocide project.” Avila noted that the fleet faced several challenges in recent days, including adverse weather, bureaucratic hurdles, and an incendiary drone attack on one of its largest ships off the Tunisian coast last week.

Avila affirmed that all obstacles have been overcome and the fleet will continue its mission to break the blockade on the Palestinian territory “at any cost.”

The fleet’s departure had been postponed yesterday due to a severe storm. This international initiative, which includes delegations from 44 countries, aims to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and end the naval siege.
