Contaminated Egyptian ‘potato seeds’ arrive in Yemen, threatening food security

SANAA, Sept. 17 (YPA) – Media sources revealed on Wednesday that a massive shipment of approximately 500 tons of Egyptian potato seeds, contaminated with serious diseases—most notably “brown rot”—has arrived in Yemen via the Al-Wadiah border crossing.

Despite laboratory warnings about the danger these seeds pose to local soil and crops, they were brought in under the guise of being for human consumption.

The shipment has sparked significant concern, particularly because the seeds were not adequately inspected or treated before entering the country. Knowledgeable sources confirmed that the importer has already begun distributing the seeds to farmers in Marib, despite knowing their hazardous nature.

Observers have described the operation as an “organized crime” aimed at destroying Yemen’s food security and agriculture. They noted that diseases like brown rot could render agricultural land unusable for decades, potentially leading to higher food prices and increased reliance on imports.

In light of this dangerous development, observers are calling for an urgent investigation and for those responsible for importing the shipment to be held accountable.
