HRW documents Israeli attack on journalists in Sanaa

SANAA, Sept. 15 (YPA) – A new report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) has documented Israeli airstrikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, on September 10, targeting the headquarters of the 26 September and Al-Yemen newspapers.

The attack resulted in the deaths of 35 people, including journalists, and left dozens of civilians and passersby injured. Dozens of homes in the Al-Tahrir district were also damaged.

According to the organization, “The Israeli strike targeted media offices and the headquarters of two newspapers, coinciding with preparations by journalists at the weekly 26 September newspaper to release a new issue—contributing to the high number of casualties inside the building.”

The targeted neighborhood is a densely populated residential area near Sana’a’s Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The attacks occurred in broad daylight, putting civilians walking and driving in the streets at significant risk.

Verified footage reviewed by a human rights team shows crowded streets and victims, including children, being pulled from the rubble.

HRW underscored that radio and television facilities are civilian objects and must not be targeted.

The organization further stressed that simply being affiliated with a political group or documenting violations does not render a media facility a legitimate military target.

HRW called on the international community to pressure “Israel” to immediately cease targeting journalists and to uphold freedom of expression in accordance with international law.
