UN: There is a slim window of opportunity to prevent famine in Gaz

GAZA, Sept. 08 (YPA) – The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, said there is a slim window of opportunity to prevent famine in Gaza, warning that this opportunity is rapidly disappearing.

In a statement issued last night, Fletcher stressed that the death, destruction, starvation, and displacement of Palestinian civilians are the result of choices that defy international law and ignore the international community.

He pointed out that the latest displacement order issued by Israel against Palestinians in Gaza City comes two weeks after famine was confirmed in Gaza Governorate, and in the midst of a major military offensive.

Fletcher added: “There is a slim window, until the end of September, to prevent famine from spreading to the cities of Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis, but this window is rapidly disappearing.”

He continued: “We continue to insist that this horror can be stopped.”

Fletcher called for unhindered humanitarian access, the protection of civilians, and the implementation of the International Court of Justice’s provisional measures.
