ADEN-HADRAMOUT, Sept. 08 (YPA) – The electricity service in Yemeni areas controlled by the Saudi-led coalition is facing a catastrophic decline, with daily power outages now exceeding 12 hours in Aden and Hadramout provinces.
This collapse coincides with rising summer temperatures, intensifying the suffering of residents and threatening to paralyze vital sectors like healthcare and essential services.
Roots of the Crisis
The crisis in Hadramout was worsened by a major turbine at the “PetroMasila” gas-powered station going offline for mandatory maintenance, causing a severe generation deficit. In Aden, electricity experts attribute the breakdown to fuel shortages and a backlog of unaddressed technical faults.
Government Incapacity and Political Strife
Observers link this deterioration to the coalition-backed government’s failure to secure necessary fuel for power plants. This is happening amid ongoing political disputes between the head of the pro-coalition government and the Central Bank governor, which have also resulted in a four-month delay in public salary payments. This situation leaves the government unable to address the service crises or provide basic needs.
Warnings of Renewed Protests
Given this comprehensive service breakdown, there are growing fears of a return to street protests in the coming days. Residents are expressing their anger over the disastrous living conditions and the lack of electricity, which is disrupting all aspects of daily life.
