LAHJ, Aug. 24 (YPA) – Tensions escalated in Yemen’s Yafa region in Lahj province on Saturday amid reports that Saudi Arabia is establishing a new military camp in the remote Saadi area for fighters linked to al-Qaeda organization, according to local officials and tribal sources.
The camp is reportedly being led by Salafi cleric Yahya al-Hajouri and protected by forces loyal to Abu Zaraa al-Muharrami, deputy head of the Southern Transitional Council (STC).
Former STC deputy leader Hani bin Breik, now based in the UAE, criticized the move on social media, warning that the camp could destabilize the region. He urged the relocation of the fighters to Mocha, a city under the control of UAE-backed commander Tareq Saleh.
Tribal leaders in Yafa have also voiced concern, fearing the camp could evolve into a new stronghold for extremist activity in the area.
Sources suggest that Saudi Arabia may be attempting to establish a “security belt” in southern Yemen to counter the growing influence of UAE-backed forces led by STC President Aidarous al-Zubaidi.
This development follows the recent reactivation of a faction affiliated with the al-Dhahab family, after Saudi Arabia and the United States released a new audio recording associated with the group.
