NEW YORK, Aug. 12 (YPA) – UN envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg delivered on Tuesday a new briefing to the Security Council on Yemen.
In his briefing, the UN envoy stated that the situation was extremely fragile, and that there was an urgent need for proactive and pragmatic measures to pave the way for peace in Yemen.” We must continue our joint efforts to advance Yemen toward a peaceful future both internally and regionally.”
Grundberg stressed the importance of establishing the foundations for lasting solutions in Yemen, most notably supporting de-escalation on the front lines and working with the parties on the basis of a ceasefire.
He pointed to a series of meetings he held over the past week under the auspices of the UN-facilitated Military Coordination Committee, the most important outcomes of which were preparations for the implementation and management of a future ceasefire.
“The second priority is to establish a path for negotiations between the parties in line with the commitments made to the roadmap in December 2023,” the UN envoy clarified, explaining the importance of taking measures that build confidence and improve lives, ensuring that the compass is not lost regarding these commitments.”
“In this regard, we are witnessing positive and growing momentum to improve road access in several areas of the country, particularly the road linking Bayda and Abyan province,” he stated.” I encourage the parties to expedite the opening of additional vital roads and take further steps to facilitate the movement of people and commercial activities.”
UN Envoy Grundberg concluded his briefing to the Security Council by stating that achieving a sustainable solution to the situation in Yemen was not only possible, but an urgent necessity.
“There are no simple solutions to the challenges we face, we must strengthen our collective efforts, guided by our shared commitment to achieving lasting progress in Yemen,” he added.
