Professor at Georgetown University in USA suspended due to tweet about Iran

SANAA, July 16 (YPA) – Georgetown University announced the dismissal of Professor Jonathan Brown from his position as head of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies and his placement on temporary leave.

This came after a post on the X platform in which he called on Iran to carry out a “symbolic” attack on a US military base, following US strikes on Iranian territory within the context of the ongoing war between the Israeli occupation and Iran.

The university’s interim president, Robert M. Groves, said in the statements during a congressional hearing last Tuesday regarding the rise of anti-Semitism on American campuses, “Within minutes of knowing of the tweet, the dean contacted Professor Brown, who deleted it, and we issued a statement condemning its content. He was relieved of his chair of the department, placed on leave, and we began investigating the matter.”

The tweet sparked widespread criticism, especially in conservative circles, as some considered it direct incitement against US soldiers and a call to harm them.
