NEW YORK, June 05 (YPA) – The United States on Wednesday blocked a draft resolution in the United Nations Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, using its veto power despite support from the other 14 member states.
All 14 Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution, which called for an end to the Israeli aggression on Gaza and the entry of humanitarian aid. However, Washington’s objection prevented it from passing.
The resolution was drafted by the 10 non-permanent member states of the Security Council, who serve two-year terms.
The draft described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “catastrophic,” and called for the “immediate and unconditional lifting of all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, and to ensure its safe, unimpeded, and widespread distribution, including by the United Nations and its humanitarian partners.”
This is not the first time the United States has used its veto power to block UN resolutions related to ending the aggression on Gaza or condemning Israeli violations.
Since the outbreak of the latest war on Gaza in October 2023, Washington has repeatedly obstructed Security Council efforts to pass resolutions calling for a ceasefire or the opening of safe humanitarian corridors, despite near-unanimous support from other council members.
With unconditional US support, Israeli occupation forces have been committing acts of genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, resulting in over 179,000 Palestinians killed or injured—most of them children and women—alongside more than 11,000 missing and hundreds of thousands displaced.
